MAI

Iconic shape in a modern glow.

MAI is an exploration of one of the most defining lighting elements in modern architecture: linear light. What began as a functional solution developed its own aesthetic power in the hands of visionary architects and designers: a structuring element that gives rhythm to spaces and emphasises proportions. MAI, designed in collaboration with Herzog & de Meuron, draws on this tradition and translates it into a luminaire that meets the highest standards of material, craftsmanship and light quality.

Technical precision and design consistency go hand in hand here: uniform, powerful light in a form that defines the space. Calm, enduring and uncompromising.

A classic reimagined.

The T8 fluorescent tube was a utilitarian object: ubiquitous, functional, never intended to last forever. MAI takes this archetype as the starting point for a new design exploration. In close collaboration with Herzog & de Meuron, a luminaire has been created that is underpinned by a shared commitment to precision and enduring expression.

The result is not a reference, but an independent interpretation. Precise in its proportions, meticulous in its choice of materials, well thought-out in every transition. MAI blends into a wide variety of spaces, not through adaptation, but through the strength of a clear, self-assured form.

The aesthetics of efficiency

MAI may appear unassuming, but it is anything but. Behind its minimalist form lies lighting technology that has been taken to an unusual degree of sophistication for a product of such simplicity. The diffuser is at the heart of it all: it transforms the LED light points into a perfectly uniform, glare-free light pattern – soft enough for living spaces, yet precise enough for demanding work environments. The housing, the appearance, the heat dissipation – everything meshes seamlessly, without the slightest hint of this becoming apparent from the outside.

Minimal design, maximum design freedom

MAI can be installed in a variety of ways and positioned precisely within a space. Whether mounted directly on the ceiling, elegantly suspended, or creating clean lines on the wall, each option creates its own atmosphere and opens up new design possibilities.

Ceiling mounting – reduced and integrated

Suspended mounting – floating and present

Wall mounting – architecturally and precisely

Reduced to the essentials

For MAI, using less material is not a limitation, but a philosophy. Consistently stripping things back to the essentials reduces resource consumption and the environmental footprint – without compromising on quality or impact. What remains is the essence. And it is executed to the highest standard.
