Felice Dittli | concepteur et designer

“D'une manière générale, le design est la conception de notre environnement avec tous ses aspects, économiques, écologiques et ergonomiques.”

REGENT What does design mean to you?

Felice Dittli For me, design means examination, searching, expression, work, hobby… In general terms, design is the creation of our environment, along with all its aspects, such as economy, ecology, ergonomics, etc.

REGENT What is your perspective with regard to the design-related development of our company?

Felice Dittli Looking forward with commitment and persuasion.

REGENT How do you deal with light in a room, or more precisely how do you use daylight and artificial light?

Felice Dittli In my capacities as interior designer and lighting designer, I am often called into a construction project too late to be able to have any real influence on the way natural light is introduced into the rooms. Speaking personally, I find the possibilities for using artificial light far more exciting. There are completely different aspects here: the fulfilment of a task that demands good vision, lighting thoroughfares, the accenting of the room, arranging the lighting horizontally or vertically, lighting surface structures, etc.

REGENT For you, what are the most important aspects when developing a new means of lighting?

Felice Dittli Economy, ecology and ergonomics.

REGENT You work for REGENT as a freelance. What other jobs and projects are you working on the rest of the time?

Felice Dittli I’m currently working on a clothes shop that will depend on light almost 100% for its existence. Another project is the practice of a physiotherapist. Entirely different guidelines predominate here: intimacy, confinement and expanse, working procedures, etc. I’m also working on a private dwelling. There will shortly be a showroom for office furniture and, last but not least, my own new studio in Basel. And for some time now I have been working on a study for bathrooms – yet again here, light is an enormously important factor.

REGENT When you are designing, do you have any ideals or models?

Felice Dittli Ideals somewhat less, but we are all, of course, tied up somewhere along the line with prevailing trends. I am influenced above all by Philippe Starck and his tremendous output, his “grand entry”; by James Turrell, who has to be THE light poet; by Henry Rollings and his “extreme power”; by Ettore Sottsass and his amazing calm; by Achille Castiglioni and his “outbursts of playfulness”, also in the older age-group, by Robert Wilson and the many facets of his work.

REGENT Which design direction impresses you most, and which least?

Felice Dittli “…isms” do not interest me.

REGENT What is your greatest desire, your greatest wish?

Felice Dittli From a design point of view: many more interesting jobs in the future. From a global political point of view: peace.

REGENT Many thanks for talking to us and may we take this opportunity to wish you continued success.
